Thomas S. Brown
Tom was born in Pittsylvania County, Virginia in 1814; the names of his parents are unknown at this time. He died in his cabin on Bryant's Creek, Douglas County, Missouri on My 14th, 1896, and was buried at Yates Cemetery.
Tom left Virginia due to his dislike of slavery, and was an active abolitionist. His strong Christian beliefs told him that slavery was wrong.
In Brown County, Indiana, 1839, he married Sarah Floyd. We believe Sarah was the mother of our great grandfather born in 1839, John Wesley Brown.
After Sarah's death of childbirth in 1844, he married Margaret Davis.  Margaret died birthing twin daughters on December 25th, 1844.
Early in 1845, Tom and his infant daughters relocated to Douglas County, Missouri. They traveled by covered wagon, and once there Margaret's mother helped to raise the babies.
While building his cabin home, Tom lived above Bryant Creek within the mouth of Brown's Cave. He built a blacksmith shop, was a Methodist minister and Justice of the Peace.
On February 27th, 1846 Tom married Mary "Polly" Burden. Tom and Mary resided on Bryant's Creek, where they raised a large family.
One day a young man approached their cabin and told Mary he would like to see his father. Mary referred him to the blacksmith shop, where Tom was working. The young man crossed the creek, and a bit later he and Tom returned to the cabin. Tom then introduced the young man to his Mary as his son, John Wesley Brown.
Tom served in the Civil War, claiming he was 10 years younger when he enlisted into Company H, 46th Regiment, Missouri, as a Private, Union.
